Pre Season Update

Please find below the Colchester and East Essex Pre-season March 2018 newsletter which hopefully contains some useful information for the forthcoming season and as always contains a few requests for help.

Please do take them time to read this as it has taken me a fair while to try and summarise all relevant information into a single email. We will also post this onto our new website for future easy reference.

With the current weather as it is I am sure the cricket season is far from your minds however our first home game of the season is just 5 weeks away on Sat 7th April!

Pavilion Redevelopment

As you will be aware we have had to rethink our plans for the Pavilion Redevelopment. Our initial proposal to build an extension to the current building has proved to be unviable. Firstly the costs came in far in excess of where we were expecting and secondly we have failed to attract any significant sums of money from grant funding agencies. We are therefore looking at Plan B which is a more modest extension to the rear of the current pavilion with extra changing room space using more affordable materials and an internal refurbishment. We are currently awaiting costings on this new proposal and as soon as we have anything further we will publicise our new plans.

Corporate Summer events

As in previous years we are hosting a few corporate summer events this year and have 3 confirmed for 2018 already. As a result we have a marquee potentially available for other Colchester based companies who may wish to host their summer event at the Castle Park at a much reduced price as the cost of the marquee will be shared with those companies already confirmed.

The dates we have available are Friday 29th June and Thursday 19th July. If you work at a local company please do pass this information on to the relevant people in your organisation or if you have contacts at other local businesses please pass details on to me.

2nd Colchester Summer Beer and Cider Festival

Following the success of last year’s event we have decided to hold our 2nd Annual Summer Beer and Cider Festival. Dates of the event in 2018 will be Thursday 26th July through to Friday 29th July and once again we will be looking for sponsors of the casks and volunteers to help out during the week.

During the festival we will also have a number of cricketing activities ongoing:-

Thursday 26th July – 1st XI vs Gents of Essex at 11.30am

Friday 27th July – 1st XI vs MCC at 11.30am

Saturday 28th July – 2nd XI vs Chelmsford at 12.30pm

Sunday 29th July – Junior Kwik Cricket Festival at 10am followed by 1st vs Copdock at 1pm

Possible club social event on Saturday 21st July

Due to other corporate events going on at the club around this time we have the opportunity to hold a club social event in a marquee in front of the pavilion on the Saturday night of 21st July with every little overhead cost. We have tried to run a Summer Ball around this time the last couple of years and this really hasn’t worked so we are really keen to hear peoples thoughts on what sort of event you think might work at that time of year which would get good attendance from all sections of the club. This could be a quiz, race night, casino night or anything else you can think of.  We are also keen to hear from people who would be happy to join a small group from the club to help arrange this event.

Please email me with any thoughts or offers of help.

Clubhouse Manager required

To take some of the pressure off the current committee, who currently have to manage all of the below tasks between them,  the club is looking for a Clubhouse Manager to help with a variety of tasks related to the pavilion. These include being a keyholder, opening the pavilion for specific events and visits, managing any maintenance, cleaning and stocking of consumables, keeping a club diary of external bookings, working with the bar manager to ensure the bar is run smoothly and generally ensuring the pavilion ticks over throughout the year.

Ideally we would prefer this to be a voluntary role however we have been unsuccessful in filling this position in previous years so the club are prepared to make this a paid position for the right person. Hours per week would vary, but during the summer I would expect this to be no more than 5 hours per week.

If you or anyone you know might be interested please put them in touch with me

Bar Staff required for 2018 season

For the 2018 season we are looking for paid bar staff. Ideally this would be covered by just one person but we will consider a job share if that works best for those concerned. Likely hours during the summer months (IE Mid April to Mid Sept) are detailed below:-

Tuesday nights – First two Tuesdays of each month – 7.30pm to 10pm

Friday nights – 5.30pm to 9pm

Saturdays – Typically 2.30pm to 9pm although when there is a lunch this would be 12pm to 9pm.

Sundays – 2.30pm to 8pm – not every weekend though

If you or anyone you know might be interested please put them in touch with me.

General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)

Some of you may be aware of new data protection regulations that are coming into force from the 25th May this year.

As a result the club will need to contact everyone on our database to ensure they wish to remain on the database and to inform them what we use their data for.

Over the course of the next few weeks you will be contacted by whoever manages the group to which you belong to inform you of the new regulations and ask for your acceptance to remain on our database.

Nat West Cricket Force Pre-season preparations

As is usual at this time of the year we will require a group of volunteers to help get the ground and pavilion ready for the first home game of the season.

For 2018 we will aim to complete all activities on Easter Saturday 31st March from 9am to 5pm.

Nearer the date I will send out a further request for volunteers but please mark the date in your diaries now.

If we can get 20-30 people to help out throughout the day it will not take long to complete everything we need to do.

Playing Subscriptions for the 2018 season

Once again in 2018 we will be largely using GoCardless to collect subscriptions. For any new members we will send you a link to sign up for this.

For the 2018 season the club has taken the difficult decision to increase playing subscriptions so that they better align with other local clubs and more accurately reflect the value for money that we offer and the current cost of running cricket. Around 5 years ago we reduced our senior subscriptions from around £100 to just £55 in the hope that this would attract a flurry of new members. This unfortunately did not happen and as a result we have be heavily subsidising the cricketing activities of the club with other revenues.

For 2018 the annual subscription for all playing members (IE Juniors, Mens and Ladies) will increase to £85.  This does not include Allstars who will continue to pay a reduced fee.

Juniors will continue to pay no match fees for either senior or junior games and have the opportunity of attending both winter and summer nets for over 25 weeks of the year so this still represents excellent value for money. For families the first child is £85 and all subsequent children are £30 each.

Match fees and season tickets for all senior players remain unchanged.

Those that pay monthly will see a change in their monthly fee in May and those that pay annually will have the annual subscriptions taken from their bank accounts on the 1st May.

Anyone with any queries on subscriptions should contact our treasurer Bill Anslow at treasurer@colchestercricket.org

Fixtures

There will be no printed fixture card for the 2018 season as feedback from 2017 and previous season is that the vast majority of people now access fixtures on our play cricket website. We will distribute a document by email in the next week so that those that wish to print off the fixture list can do so.

All fixtures for the 2018 season are found on play cricket at the following link – http://colchesteree.play-cricket.com/website/web_pages/166621

There are two sets of fixtures that have not made it on to play cricket as yet. These are the Ladies Beaumont Seymour League Friday night matches and the Boys U12 Brian Taylor Trophy (Formally the Peter Coe Cup). These will both be added in the next week or so.

The club has around 150 fixtures in 2018 across the various genders and age groups so 2018 promises to be a busy season!

Playing and training kit

We are very grateful to our playing and training kit sponsors for their continued support as this means we can continue with the same style and make of kit so reducing the cost to our membership.

Thanks to Birkett Long and The Duley Practice for their continued playing shirt sponsorship.

Thanks to Haart Colchester for their continued T20 shirt sponsorship.

Thanks to Cooper BMW Colchester for their continued sponsorship of the training kit.

It is an expectation that all CEECC playing members (Senior and junior) wear a club playing shirt / T20 shirt when representing the club in any matches so please make sure you order in good time.
